Golden Wedding Anniversary - May 10th, 2019

My parents met in university in Canada (he at McGill and she at Queens University) after being set up by mutual friends, and were married on May 10th, 1969. Only my father’s side of the family attended the wedding since my Mom’s family were all in Hong Kong. For their 50th anniversary, my parents didn’t want to make a big fuss out of it , but I did! After all, how many marriages last 50 years? To honor their wishes, I flew them out to California for a low-key weekend at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes.

It was a clear day and Catalina Island was visible in the background. The welcome champagne at check-in was delicious!

Din Tai Fung - Del Amo - we were able to reserve the private room. Mom told us what it was like to immigrate to a country where she didn’t know the language, and Mom and Dad only had one car for many years while we were growing up. Life wasn’t always as good or easy as it is now, but she said each generation would have it better than the last. Cameron commented that it would be hard to beat Gooma’s life :)

Mother’s Day brunch feast at Catalina Kitchen. Ryan ate his fill of snow crab legs. The soft shell crab benedict and duck parpadelle were favorites, as well as the fried chicken and waffles and candied bacon.

We are very grateful that Mom and Dad’s families immigrated from China to Hong Kong to Canada and the United States. A lot of hard work, and a bit of luck got us to where we are today. We were overjoyed to be celebrating this momentous 50th wedding anniversary together as a family Congratulations to Mom and Dad. Norm and family prepared some poetry to read, and Karen found a “gold” brick piggy bank to symbolize all of the pennies that have been saved.
