Bucket List: The Galapagos Islands

Survival of the fittest - I see it every day in life and work. It’s a law, like gravity, and rich men dating pretty girls in 3rd world countries. I had been wanting to follow in the footsteps of Darwin and been looking at trips for at leas a decade and finally got to go in January 2019. Shirley and Michele were able to join in on the fun! Highlights included swimming with playful sea lions and seeing so many iguanas, boobies, flamingos, and turtles in the wild.

Darwin Center

After flying from Quito to Baltra via Guayaquil (where Shirley spent a night stuck in the airport), we took a bus and then a ferry and finally made it to the Darwin Center!

The Galaxy II

This LiveAboard boat was our home for 3 nights. The room was large and set up for 14 guests. We took zodiac boats for the shore landings. I shared my room with Georgina, a lovely British woman in her 30’s.

We saw land and marine turtles and they were huge!

It was impressive to see how unafraid the birds on the islands were to human visitors.

My favorite part of the trip was meeting so many interesting people from all over the world: France, Canada, England, Russia, Lebanon and the US were all represented. I was inspired by this diverse and accomplished group of travelers and it made our trip. We even saw a blood moon eclipse from the boat!
